Opened in 1992, the Hong Kong Eye Hospital replaced the Yaumatei Eye Centre as a secondary and tertiary eye referral centre. It occupies a total floor area of 13,065 square metres with a staff force of 230.

It operates a full range of subspecialty service including Cornea, Glaucoma, Medical Retina,Vitreoretina, Oculoplastic, Neuro-ophthalmology, Retinoblastoma, Paediatric eye and Strabismus.
The Academic Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is integrated with the Hospital's clinical service. It is an important research and training centre for ophthalmic trainees and provides continuous medical education for private ophthalmologists. It also takes up the role of teaching medical students, optometry students, student nurses and general practitioners.
