With the start of the 2008 Beijing Olympics less than six weeks away, tourists and locals alike are snapping up Games souvenirs, with multicoloured ballpoint pens the most popular item, a media report said Monday.

Hundreds of souvenirs are available in Hong Kong from more than 20 officially licensed shops with stationery, pins, soft toys, cups and commemoration coins top of buyers' shopping lists, the South China Morning Post said.

Commenting on the response from shoppers, Angel Yip, manager of the main Olympic gift shop at the Bank of China Tower in the central business district, said stock almost ran out the first day the shop opened on April 29.

"We had to set up one more payment counter to deal with customers queuing up for a long time to buy gifts," Yip said.

She added: "The bestselling product is a multicoloured ballpoint pen with the image of the Fuwas," referring to the five Games mascots, each representing one colour of the Olympic rings.

"It's only 12 Hong Kong dollars (1.53 US). People come here and buy boxes of them as gifts for their staff, students or friends. Everyday we sell at least 1,000 such pens," Yip said

Olympic gift shops are authorised to operate until the end of the year.
